SSMC Investigates City of Orlando Storm Pipe

04/19/2017 02:07 PM
SSMC was recently contacted by the City of Orlando to investigate a 108" and a 96" storm pipe that makes sweeping turns through what is going to be the future home of a University of Central Florida downtown campus building. The current parking lot is going to be the site of the new downtown campus. The City's large storm pipe that used to run under the old Amway Arena is causing conflict with the proposed building layout. The arena is gone, but the pipe still remains. SSMC originally sent a surveyor down the outfall in Lake Dot in a kayak to traverse as much of the pipe as possible. SSMC met with the City on site as soon as the conflict was identified. SSMC prepped two dig crews to find and track the east edge of the 108" pipe as it curved towards a manhole. The City will need to build a new structure at this location and relocate the storm piping which stays surcharged with about 5 foot of water. SSMC completed finding the east edge within the requested area. The City brought in Blackwater Dive Team to enter the pipe and further map specifics of the turns in both the 96" and 108" pipes. These pipes are -15 foot deep, making the mapping more challenging than if they were shallow. SSMC aided the dive team in tracking the pipe curves by sending transmitters down into the pipes with the divers, so the location of the curves could be marked topside.

SSMC teamed with Alday-Howell Engineering to submit the grant under their continuing services contract with the City. We are very excited about the opportunity to work with Alday-Howell and the City of Marianna on this project.

City of Orlando Selects SSMC to Update its Stormwater GIS

12/20/2016 02:04 PM

On December 5, 2016 the Orlando City Commission voted to authorize Southeastern Surveying & Mapping Corporation (SSMC) to provide professional Stormwater Inventory and Asset Management services to update the City’s Stormwater GIS database.  Between 2009 and 2015, SSMC performed a city-wide stormwater inventory over five phases where SSMC inventoried, located and inspected over 55,000 drainage structures for the City.

The 2016-2017 inventory update will identify, locate, photograph and inspect stormwater inlets, manholes, outlets, open channels and ponds conveying stormwater runoff from all publicly maintained and named private roadways within and adjacent to the incorporated Orlando City limits including roadways maintained by the City of Orlando, Orange County, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Orange County Expressway Authority. As directed by City personnel, this maintenance update will collect new and updated stormwater facilities which were constructed or modified, after the initial inventory was performed by SSMC between 2009 and 2015.

According to SSMC’s GIS Division Manager Brian R. Garvey, PE, GISP, “SSMC is extremely grateful to continue serving the City of Orlando by maintaining this valuable asset. Building and maintaining the City’s stormwater GIS database has utilized the perfect blend of our Surveying, Geographic Information Systems and Sub-surface Utility Engineering expertise. It’s a great fit for the services that SSMC offers, and we are proud that the City recognized us for this important project.”

In addition to providing horizontal and vertical location services, GIS databases, and inspection photos and videos, SSMC will be integrating the collected data with the City’s existing ArcGIS and CarteGraph Asset Management Systems.

Tampa's SUE Division Finishes Project for New Roller Coaster at Busch Gardens

09/29/2016 11:25 AM
Tampa's Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Division recently finished a project for a new roller coaster at Busch Gardens.

In order for the Contractor to safely evacuate the area for demolition and new construction, existing utilities needed to be mapped. Using SSMC's state-of-the-art Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic utility locating equipment, we were able to successfully accomplish that goal. By performing SUE at the beginning of the project, our client was able to make informed decisions to avoid costly conflicts and delays. It is shown in a study done by Purdue University, that every dollar spent on SUE saves an average of $4.62 per project. Read more about the study at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/programadmin/pus.cfm

This project was a great success, with the new roller coaster opening on time in accordance with the construction schedule.

SSMC Purchases New CCTV Unit

09/02/2016 11:02 AM

Due to the growing demand of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)/Laser Profiling Pipe Inspection Services, SSMC has purchased a second CCTV Unit.
Using CCTV, laser profilers and digital recording systems, SSMC provides clients with color digital imagery, color digital video and internal pipe survey data for pipes from 6 inches to 100 inches in diameter. The laser profiler collects internal pipe survey data and is used to create pipeline reports containing the measurement of faults and other features inside the pipeline. This includes measurements of pipe size, laterals, water levels and other features, as well as automatic analysis of pipe ovality and capacity up to 30 times per second. CCTV software allows seamless recording of all pertinent pipe data easily recorded onto DVD/CD and printable table formats for report supplementation. All video imagery can be linked to the pipes in a GIS for seamless mapping and video review in the office.
CCTV/Laser Profiler utility inspection systems allow the operator to record important information such as time, date, manhole/station numbers and operating personnel. The use of this system allows SSMC to localize and pinpoint problems such as cracks, sags, root obstructions, settlement or breaks. The system is used to perform as-built inspections, locate service connections, and find buried manholes, valves, etc.

Reservoir Provides Increased Storage of Reclaimed Water

March 24, 2016

Ships may be christened with bottles of champagne, but reclaimed reservoirs are christened with shots of tap water.

At least that was the good luck ceremony performed at the recent celebration for the Boyette Reclaimed Water Reservoir in Pasco County. District staff members joined other community leaders to celebrate the completion of the 500-million- gallon project. They toasted the project by pouring test tube shots of tap water into the reservoir.

The reservoir, which was cooperatively funded with the District, will provide increased storage as part of the Pasco County Master Reuse System. Covering about 80 acres, project contractors say it’s the largest reclaimed water reservoir in the United States.

It will allow Pasco County to better manage reclaimed water by storing it during the wet season when demand for reclaimed water is low and making it available to customers during the dry season when it is needed. The project also will make reclaimed water available to more potential customers in Pasco County. The reservoir is located in Central Pasco County, east of Interstate 75 and north of the Wesley Center Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Reclaimed water is highly treated wastewater and can be used for irrigation and other uses to extend our water supplies.
Visit WaterMatters.org/Reclaimed for more information on reclaimed water projects in the District.
