Cemetery Mapping

Cemetery Mapping

Today, many communities are developing Geographic Information Systems to provide citizens with information on property ownership, utilities infrastructure, and the environment. Yet, many municipal cemeteries continue to maintain their records on aging paper maps or antiquated index cards. Important information on graves and plots, the names of the deceased, plot owners, and dates of purchase is often available on only one map used continuously in both office and field, or on multiple maps updated at different times, or in card files in multiple formats. With time, these records are deteriorating, labeling is illegible, and retrieval of information difficult, costly, or impossible.

To assist municipal cemeteries in managing grave and plot information, SSMC offers a range of cemetery mapping solutions, from digitizing existing maps to creating a cemetery map layer and database tied to a municipal GIS. Stored in standardized format in a centralized repository, the data is easy to access, maintain, and deliver across government departments and to the public.
